1st Post-Primary Individual Championship

The 1st Cork County Post-Primary Championship began with individual competitions held across five regions: North (centre in Mallow), East (centre in Carrigtwohill), South (centre in Riverstick), West (centre in Dunmanway), and Central (Cork). The Final was organised at the SMA Wilton Centre, where the top players from each region qualified to compete.

Participants faced a challenging path to reach the Final: they first had to win their respective regional events in order to qualify, where they then competed against the other regional champions. In total, 16 schools and more than 160 students participated across all events. All competitions were organised using a Swiss (Dutch) system, ensuring that players were paired against opponents with the same or very similar scores. Tie-breaks were determined by secondary points, calculated from the total points scored by a player’s opponents; in other words, players who faced stronger opposition were ranked higher when scores were equal.

In the Final, students from Coláiste Trease Kanturk (Connor Steyn, Emir Abiltarov, and Alex Kwok) of the North region dominated the tournament, with three of the top four places taken by players from this school. Matthew O’Neill from PBC Cork was the only player able to challenge them closely, finishing just half a point behind the overall winner and securing second place in a tie for that position.
