The 1st Cork County Junior Championship was organised on 8–9 November at Davis College, Mallow. The tournament was dedicated to connecting the memory of Cork’s chess heritage with the present and to continuing this tradition for the next generation.
The championship was organised in four sections:
- U19 – Philip Short Cup, commemorating the last Cork-born Irish Champion,
- U14 – Maurice J. Coveney Cup, honouring an iconic Cork organiser and junior coach
- U10 – Joe Browne Cup. Joe Browne was a pivotal figure in the development of junior chess; he introduced the Munster Junior Championship in the 1980s, which was named in his honour. This tradition has now been revived.
- Girls’ section – Kate Finn Cup, commemorating the Kanturk-born first British Women’s Champion.

In this introductory year, a total of 61 players competed for the trophies, coming from all parts of Cork County. Davis College, which is very active in chess activities throughout the academic year, hosted the event and provided a comfortable setting that proved to be an ideal venue for the championship.
Players were only permitted to compete in their own age groups, with no movement allowed between categories. The tournament was organised in a Swiss format for the more populous U10 and U14 sections, while the U19 section was run as a round-robin event.
